Semester Project: Wild Country Side

Semester Project: Wild Country Side square repeat (8x8 foot)

The Wild Country Side design brief started by visiting local gardens/parks around the Philadelphia area, painting landscapes, plants and florals from life. My original watercolor paintings were then photocopied and arranged into a square pattern repeat.

40 watercolor paintings were created to create the Wild Country Side layout.

I wanted miniature figures throughout the layout engaged in different activities from breastfeeding to taking selfies.

The finished 8 x 8 foot collaged square repeat pattern.

I then traced one repeat onto canvas.

The next phases of the Wild Country Side project was to create a mood board with a completely different feeling from the original watercolor layout.  The colors I chose reflects a fall/winter platte while still having a joyful feeling.

Images found on Pinterest.

The painting above is a 4x4 feet square repeat. My finial review went very well. Feels good to have created this much work in a short span of time.

I was also asked to photograph the painting above and put it into a repeat. Shm. So I still need to work on the the repeat but overall my professors loved what I created. Feels good.

Not done yet. Screen printing my design was optional.  I really wanted to see how my 5 color repeat pattern would look screen printed and mounted on lampshades, however I exposed the pink layer in the wrong direction so I wasn't able to mount it. I'm inspired to learn how to screen print yardage.

Students were asked to design an athleisure garment for 2017 fall market in responding to the growing demand for casual, comfortable yet fashionable clothing. The vest below was create by two other teammates and myself.

Very rough sketch of my vest idea.

I really wanted to create a pattern inspired by the sunset below for the inside lining but that would have made the retail cost too high for the private label my team chose.

The sunset during class with Prof. James Gutman was the inspiration for our colorways. My team decided we would offer the vest in Black, Purple, Raspberry, and Orange.

Sewing is not my strength but we did our best to create the vest. Looking back, I would have gladly paid another student to create the garment, It was a headache to make.
